Jordan Spieth started 2016 just as he finished 2015, with an emphatic 8 shot victory in the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawaii at the weekend. Spieth finished the 4 rounds a massive 30 under par, only 1 shot behind Ernie Els' championship record of -31. This is Spieth's 7th PGA tournament victory in his 77th event and saw him pick up a cool $1.18 million for his efforts!!
Spieth has averaged 26.5 putts per round in his first 2 events of the season which is rather impressive!! How many putts do you average? 30?...34??...38??
This is one area of the game that many people overlook and don't practice, and yet it could be one that could save you the most strokes!
Here are three things to focus on:
1) Get short putts to the hole
Make sure you give your 10 footers a chance! This shouldn't be difficult should it? Pros leave about 7% of these short while a 20 handicap player will leave 17% of these putts short on average!!
2) Hole more putts from 3-8 feet
This will give you more 1 putts and less 3 putts and make a big impact to your scoring!
3) Distance Control matters!
How many 3 putts do you average per round? Getting the ball only 1 foot closer to the hole on your long putts can have a massive impact on reducing your 3 putts!
Look out in next week's newsletter for some drills which you can work on to improve your short and long putting.
Rules Changes 2016
With the New Year also comes some important rules changes in the world of golf.
The most significant changes are outlined below:
1) Rule 18-2b (Ball moving after address) This rule no longer automatically penalises the player for the ball moving after the player has addressed the ball. The player is only penalised one shot if the movement of the ball is the fault of the player
2) Rule 6-6d (submitting incorrect scorecard) The player is no longer automatically disqualified for submitting an incorrect scorecard. If the player returns a lower score on the scorecard as a result of failing to include penalty shots the player was not aware of before completing his round, he will be allowed to add the penalty under rule and then an additional 2 strokes for the scorecard error.
3) Rule 14-1b (Anchoring) From 1 January 2016 all golfers will be prohibited from anchoring the club either "directly" or by use of an "anchor point" in making a stroke. The penalty is loss of hole in match play or two strokes in stroke play. This is probably the most debated rule change in recent years with many top players using this method of putting to great success like Adam Scott, Bernard Langer and Keegan Bradley. Its sure to continue to create some discussions and some grey areas within golf clubs!!
