Rule of the Week
Playing the 8th hole (Old) Jack's drive went down the left into the heather while Charlie's ball went right just into the gorse. The two separated and started to look for their drives. Coming upon a ball that Charlie thought was possibly his, lifted it for identification purposes without announcing his intention to Jack. He also failed to mark the position of the ball before he lifted it and cleaned the ball more than was necessary for it to be identified. Does Charlie incur a penalty of 3 strokes?
No. Charlie incurs only a penalty of 1 stroke for failing to act in accordance with the procedure for lifting ball for identification purposes. An additional penalty under Lifting and marking the ball or Cleaning the ball is not justified- See Exception to Rule 21 "Cleaning Ball".
