I hope you've all had a fantastic week on and off the golf course and welcome to another exciting edition of the Moray Pro Shop weekly newsletter, bringing you up to date with all the latest news and gossip from within the walls of MGC.
Well the season is finally here... Last Saturday saw the annual Whitbread Shield played for over both Moray Old and Elgin Golf Club.
As always we have high hopes of kick starting the season with a fine victory against our close neighbours. Unfortunately it was a case of so near, yet so far, as we were again beaten overall 23 ½ - 16 ½.
However for the first time, Stevie Grant (Secretary) and I played together in what is surely to be a great team pairing for many years to come. We took on Michael Mcallan and Gary Abel from Elgin over the Old Course, and managed to clock up a point for the team (2&1 victory) even though our efforts were in vain. Stevie also managed to play a delightful Driver & Hybrid into 15 feet at the last and rolled in the birdie putt for the galleries.... or the students on the putting green!
We had a great game and great banter during the round and really enjoyed the day as many of you did. We can't wait until next year to finally take victory overall..
We have had a busy week again with the 94th Scottish Student Golf Championships held at the club. The students started to arrive on Saturday afternoon for practice rounds. Although I'm sure some were putting more practice time into rounds in the bar!!
As usual there has been a wide array of weather on display, with high winds on Sunday morning followed by Sunshine and finally hail stones. Thankfully the weather improved as the week went on and the standard of golf reflected that.
The Individual Championship includes 2 rounds on both courses, and there was some fantastic scoring over the event. Stirling's Craig Howie won the Men's Individual with a total of -10 which included a course record nine under par 62 on route to a 7 shot victory. Craig had rounds of 69,70 (New) 62,71 (Old) for a total of 272.
In the women's event, Stirling Universities
Gemma Batty took a 9 shot victory over her team mate Jen Saxton with a winning score of 5 under par 287 with rounds of 77,67 (Old) 67,76 (New) As I write this the team event is in full swing with the finals taking place on Friday.
This weekend sees the start of the competitions with the Greensomes played on Saturday over the Old Course, and the Open Texas Scramble played on Sunday. There are still late entries for the Greensomes and if anyone wishes to play but doesn't have a partner please
contact the shop and we will do our best to pair you up.
We will be holding our Junior Induction Day on Saturday between 2-4pm at the Clubhouse.
This is just an informal event for junior members, or potential members and parents to come along to meet the team and have any questions answered regarding junior membership, coaching opportunities or anything else you are unsure about.
We will also be holding a
FREE putting competition with some prizes up for grabs.
This last week we have had a number of fitting days on including TaylorMade, PING and Callaway which have all been well attended. Thanks to everyone who came along on the days. Hopefully you all enjoyed the sessions and took something from the experience.....maybe even a new shiny club.
The next fitting event will be with
Wilson Staff on
Thursday, 21 April between 2.00-6.00pm at the Moray GC's practice area.
We will have some special promotions available on the day, and everyone who books a

Bobby was taking relief from a sprinkler head on the 13th Old. He drops his ball and it rolls more than 2 club lengths. He re-drops his ball with the same result. Before he places his ball on the spot where his ball first struck the part of the course when re-dropped, can he remove loose impediments on or around the spot which his ball is to be placed?
Answer: Yes.
