Hello golfers,

I hope you've all had a fantastic week on and off the golf course and welcome to another exciting edition of the Moray Pro Shop weekly newsletter, bringing you up to date with all the latest news and gossip from within the walls of MGC.

Tour news

It's a big weekend of golf with the US Open taking place at Oakmont Country Club. This is the 9th time it's been held on the course. The par 70 course measures 7254 yards and looks to be set up in the usual US Open fashion with lightening fast greens, narrow fairways and thick rough. The scoring is usually pretty high compared to most other weekly events, and I'm sure the Pro's will struggle to tame the course as usual. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts. Do you like seeing the Pro's struggle or do you think the course is too difficult?

My outside bets for the week are Brooks Koepka and Matt Kuchar.

Click here to let me know your thoughts, or come and have a chat in the pro shop.

The draw for the Pro Shop US Open sweepstake are available by clicking here....Good Luck.

Last week, the Ladies Curtis Cup was played over in County Wicklow, and it was great to see the GB & I team taking victory by 11 ½ - 8 ½ over their American opponents for the 2nd time in 10 events. Our very own Rules Official, Liz Munro was officiating during the event and said "It was Awesome". It's great to have Liz representing the golf club at this event and great to see GB&I lift the trophy. Let's hope it encourages some of the up and coming junior girls to keep at the game.

Staff news

Derek has been away playing in a 4 ball event at Royal Musselburgh this week and then has a run of events with the Northern Open at Royal Dornoch next week and then the Elgin Pro-Am followed by the Scottish Open qualifier at Moray GC. Hopefully with a bit of golf behind him he can have a few good rounds and maybe tee it up with the world's best at Castle Stuart.

We have the Mens, Ladies and Seniors Club Championships all underway, and I'll do a full round up in next week newsletter. Good Luck to everyone playing.

Competition news

Congratulations to the Scratch team who won the 2nd leg of their match against Turriff Golf Club by a score of 4 1/2 - 3 1/2 away from home to win the match 10-6 overall, and progress to the next round.

Men's Club Championships (CSS 73/74)

Kevin Thomson leads the way at the halfway stage of the Men's Club Championships after solid rounds of 70/74 for a +2 par total of 144. The course was in great condition with quick greens and firm and bouncy fairways making the course play very tricky from the blue tees. Stuart Tatters is one shot back on 145 with Michael Wilson 3rd back on 150. The 3rd round will be played on Friday night with the deciding round taking place on Saturday afternoon. Good Luck to all competitors.

1st - Kevin Thomson - 70 + 74 = 144, 2nd - Stuart Tatters - 73 + 72 = 145, 3rd - Michael Wilson - 76 + 74 = 150, 4th - Ian S Geddes - 76 + 75 = 151, 5th - Malcolm L MacLeman - 75 + 78 = 153

Rule of the week

Approaching their putts on the 6th green (Old) Neil and James noticed that there was a lot of sand on the green from both bunkers front left and right lying on their lines of putt. Before James putted he took off his cap and made a good job of clearing the sand from his line. Neil was busy clearing the sand on his line with his putter but was finding it harder to clear. James called over to Neil "You will find it easier if you use your cap."

Neil thought he was only permitted to remove loose impediments i.e. sand on the green with his hand or his club

What was James' response?

James said that under Rule 25 'Loose Impediments', a player is permitted to use any means to remove loose impediments. except that in removing them on the line of putt a player must not press anything down.
