I hope you've all had a fantastic week on and off the golf course and welcome to another exciting edition of the Moray Pro Shop weekly newsletter, bringing you up to date with all the latest news and gossip from within the walls of MGC.

Pros news

In the world of Golf, Dustin Johnson managed to secure his first major Championship at the weekend with a 3 shot victory over the tough Oakmont Country Club. Dustin managed to overcome some previous near misses. Last year he 3 putted from 12 feet to lose out to Jordan Spieth by a single shot. He was penalised for grounding his club in a waste area on the 18th during the 2010 PGA Championship which cost him a place in the playoff, and had earlier that year had a final round collapse with an 82 in the US Open after holding the 54 hole lead.

I for one was really pleased to see him finally pick up his first major and put some of his previous collapses to rest.

The Rules of Golf were a major talking point of the final 9 holes. Eventual winner Dustin Johnson had an agonising wait of uncertainty as he tried to win his first major. On the 5th Hole, his ball moved and there was uncertainty over whether he had caused the ball to move.

Video coverage showed that Dustin hadn't grounded his club when the ball moved a tiny distance. At the time he was told to play the ball as it lay and there was no penalty. However the USGA officials later decided he had caused it to move and so was given a 1 shot penalty. Thankfully after signing off with a birdie 3 at the 18th, it made no difference to the score and he was crowned Champion, much to the delight to the crowd and pretty much everyone watching.

For the record, a USGA official explained that because Johnson soled his putter near the ball, and it moved an iota "pretty immediately" thereafter, that the "weight of evidence" leaned toward the human in the proximity of the ball being the cause of the movement.

I thought the decision to penalise him was a poor one, and am just glad it didn't have a bearing on the final result. What did you think?

Competition news

It's been a busy week at Moray GC with the Gents, Seniors and Ladies Club Championships taking place over the last week. Congratulations must go to Kevin Thomson on winning the Men's Club Championships for the first time, finishing with a fantastic -3 under 68 to eventually win by a massive 11 shots from Stuart Tatters (299), with Malcolm Macleman (303) back in 3rd place.

I walked round a few holes during the final round and the golf was superb, and Kevin thoroughly deserved his win.

Custom fitting

Murdoch Hits them Out the Park

We recently had a custom fit session with Moray member John Murdoch. John was interested in trying the TaylorMade M2 Irons and was keen to see if he could gain any yardage over his 10 year old irons. I was confident that we could gain him some yardage, however even I wasn't expecting such an improvement...

We went for a lightweight graphite shaft in a seniors flex which was a little lighter and more flexible than he had used in the past.

John increased his ball speed by an average of 13 mph and this improved his 7 iron carry distance from 122 yards to a whopping 148 yards! (a 26 yard increase).

Come and take the M2 Challenge and see if we can gain you extra yardage.

Click here to get in touch to request your fitting session.
