I hope you've all had a fantastic week on and off the golf course and welcome to another exciting edition of the Moray Pro Shop weekly newsletter, bringing you up to date with all the latest news and gossip from within the walls of MGC.

Club news

Last weekend was a quiet one for all the members as the club hosted the Scottish Open Qualifier on the Old Course.

We had 117 golfers trying to tame the Old Course with 5 places at this week's Scottish Open up for grabs, as well as a £50,000 prize fund.

We have had some really fantastic feedback from the visiting Professionals about the condition of the course and in particular the greens. Congratulations to Kevin and his team for getting the course in top condition. We rely heavily on word of mouth to advertise us to new potential visiting golfers, and this weekend's event will have helped promote the club to a wider audience.

Despite the poor weather forecasts, the players managed to stay dry for most of the weekend, but a cooler, windier 2nd day made scoring much trickier and the winning scores much lower than expected. It just goes to show that we have a tough course out there and when the wind blows it's a real test of golf, just like many of you experience on a weekly basis...

In the end it was a 4 under total of 138 by Kilmarnock's Jack Doherty which won the event with rounds of 68 & 70 to pip 4 players by a single shot.

Doherty (34) who plays on the second tier of the European Tour - the Challenge Tour - shot rounds of 68 and 70 to top the leaderboard.

The Kilmarnock golfer's success made up for the heartache of just failing to qualify for The Open championships at Royal Troon, after Colin Montgomerie pipped him by a shot at Glasgow Gailes less than a week earlier.

Doherty was happy with the consolation of a first shot at Castle Stuart, and he had nothing but praise for the course he played for the very first time.

"It's fantastic, and in really good condition," he said. "The greens must be one of the best in Scotland just now, definitely. I played Glasgow Gailes on Tuesday, they were super and these are up there with it as well."

5 Qualifiers

138 - J Doherty (68, 70)
139 - G Wright (West Linton) 70, 69, P Whiteford (Unattached) 69, 70, A Forsyth (Mearns Castle) 69,70, K Nicol (Paul Lawrie GC) 67,72

One of 6 amateur invites, Kyle Godsman (Moray) had a great event and so nearly managed to make the top 5 with rounds of 67, 74 for a -1 total of 141 to miss out by a couple of shots. It was a great effort by Kyle and he was still in with a chance of qualifying until a bogey on the 17th finished his challenge. Nevertheless a fantastic performance and hopefully he can go one better next year.

So this week's been a busy one in the world of sport with the Scottish Open starting along the road at Castle Stuart, the Euro Championships Semi-Finals, Wimbledon and Summer Junior Camp.

 Pros news

Derek and I had 40 children attending our junior camp this week over 3 days which has been great to see. There certainly could be a couple stars of the future here this week

I have also been away to Castle Stuart with 9 of the junior team and the Junior Convenor, Graham Broad. We headed through to the practice day on Wednesday which was great to get up close with the top stars, and allowed the boys to get some autographs and selfies with the players. I also managed to get the boys onto a couple of the Company Tour Trucks for a show round and to find out what happens with the players during the week.

We managed to get a look at the Cleveland/Srixon Truck and the TaylorMade Truck, and had a short chat from one of their team before we headed onto the course to show some support for our Secretary Stevie Grant who was playing in the Pro-Am with Shane Lowry. Despite a large crowd heckling Stevie on the 9th tee, he managed to scream his drive down the middle with ease on his way to winning the event.

Competition news

This weekend we have the RNLI (Sat) over the Old Course. This is also a qualifier for the CAPRO Cup so be sure not to NR so you can pick up some points.. We are also just over a week away until the Moray Open 5 Day Championship starts. Have a good weekend and we hope the golfing Gods are with you this weekend.
