Well, it's finally here everybody!! That thing you all thought was an ancient myth....Summer! Even if it is only for 5 days it's been so nice to have a few days of blue skies and sunshine.
As a result it's been really busy in the shop with plenty of visitors and members taking to the links. We have also had quite a few walk on visitors during the nicer weather which is what we have been missing so far this year.....here's hoping it's not the last we see of the great weather.
The Olympics has been at the forefront of the sporting headlines these last 2 weeks. It's great to see the GB team have so much success currently sitting 2nd on the overall medal table which is just fantastic. I've been enjoying watching the Gymnastics and Cycling. These are two sports I usually have no interest in, but I've loved watching these at the Olympics and you can see how this could have massive impacts on such sports participation levels on the back of the huge global audiences. It's also great to see so much success within GB's team. Cycling's Jason Kenny and Laura Trott have won 5 gold medals between them which are more than 199 countries combined!!
Golf's return to the Olympics was a positive one and it was great to see Justin Rose battle it out with Open Champion, Henrik Stenson, to pick up Gold for the GB team.
It was also great to hear how positive Justin was about the Olympics and that winning a gold medal was up there in his lifetime goals alongside winning all 4 majors. I for one am happy to see Golf included in the Olympics and think it can help with growing the game on a global level.
I'm not sure I would have gone with an individual event but would have preferred to see a team match play event similar to the original Dunhill Cup a number of years ago. What are your views on Golf's inclusion into the Olympics? I'd be interested to hear your comments.
I also wanted to give a shout out to local member Kyle Godsman (pictured).
Kyle recently won the Leven Gold Medal recently with rounds of 69,68,73,78 to win by 4 shots from his rivals.
This is Kyle's 2nd Men's Order of Merit victory and he continues his good form from last year which saw him crowned as the 2015 SGU Men's Order of Merit winner.
Hopefully if he continues to pick up victories it's just a matter of time before he gets an international call up!!
Now the countdown to the big event of the year is on!! No not the Ryder Cup....but the CaproCup. We have had qualifying events 8 & 9 over the last couple of weekends which leaves the final qualifying event on Saturday 3rd September in the Monthly Medal. The event will be played over both courses over the first weekend in October which is also the Ryder Cup weekend. We will have 2 teams of 12 players selected with 16 automatic qualifiers and then 3 captains' picks from both the Captain and yours truly!
Saturday will see a morning 4 ball match followed by Greensomes in the afternoon. Finally singles matches on Sunday will conclude the match and one team will be crowned the very first Capro Cup Champions. It's sure to be a fun weekend of golf and hopefully something which if all goes well we can repeat on an annual basis.

Playing on a wet Saturday morning Pete's drive found the bunker on the right side of the 2nd fairway Old. There was casual water in the flat of the bunker where his ball lay and his nearest point of relief not nearer the hole was to the side of his ball but on a down slope. He knew that dropping from shoulder height his ball would plug in the damp sand from where he was not confident of playing his ball out.
He turned to Joe, and asked "what are my options for this casual water situation?"
Joe who had many times experiences this situation was able to explain that under rule 25-1b (relief from abnormal ground conditions in a bunker) Pete had another option which did not require him to drop his ball in the bunker. Under penalty of 1 stroke he could drop outside the bunker keeping the spot where his ball lay directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball was dropped, with no limit to how far behind the bunker the ball may be dropped. Pete decided that this was the best option for him. Thanks Joe
