Hello golfers,
I hope you've all had a fantastic week on and off the golf course and welcome to another exciting edition of the Moray Pro Shop weekly newsletter, bringing you up to date with all the latest news and gossip from within the walls of MGC.
Derek has been away this week playing some competitive golf. On Saturday he played in a Pro Am at Portlethen Golf Club shooting a +3 round of 74. Then Derek made the trip down to West Lothian Golf Club to take part in the Young Professionals Order of Merit event which is a 72 hole stroke play event. I'm pleased to say Derek managed to make the cut after two rounds of 74 (+3). Derek then finished with further rounds of 74 & 73 to finish 23rd for the week.
I played with Derek last week at Castle Stuart and he was really striking the ball well from tee to green. Just like last week, if he can start holing a few more putts then I'm sure he'll see his confidence and scoring improve.
It's fair to say Derek took the money last week (must be giving him too much time to play golf...). We travelled through to Castle Stuart for a staff day out while young Michael covered the shop for the day. Unfortunately Julieann injured herself the night before our match so had to make do with caddying for me. (Only joking I didn't really make her carry my bag with a bad back). She had been attempting to copy some of the moves she picked up from watching the 10m diving at the Olympics while playing on her sons trampoline and let's just say it didn't go according to plan. I have to say the course was in great shape and I forgot just how good the views all around the golf course are.
I am looking into arranging a member's away day to Castle Stuart and so am trying to get an idea of numbers that might be interested. Due to booking a large number of tee times and booking in advance we are not able to take advantage of the
£200 tee time offer, but Castle Stuart have offered us a price of
£75 per person which would include coffee and bacon rolls before golf and a 2 course meal afterwards which seems like pretty good value to me.
We would possibly look to add an extra
£5 into a prize fund (taking the total fee to
£80) and run a Stableford competition on the day with a couple of prizes available.
If you would be interested please
click here and also let me know if you would like us to arrange a bus or happy to make your own way there.
This weekend we have the
36 Hole Tantalus Open on the Old Course with a full field which is great to see.
We will also have a visit from a company called
Klub Klean which some of you may remember from a few years ago. They basically provide an Ultrasonic Club Cleaning service which for
£5 per set will give the club heads and grips a great clean. They will be set up just outside the shop between 10am and 5pm so come along and give it a try.
Abercromby Cup Congratulations to the scratch team on reaching the final of the Abercromby Cup after defeating Elgin 11-5 over the two legs. Moray took full advantage of the home leg on the Sunday night taking a 6.5-1.5 lead into the return match at Elgin. This time it was a closer match as expected but the team still managed to pull out a win for a comfortable two leg victory in the end.
Moray will play either Fraserburgh or Ellon in the final on
Saturday, 10 September at Duff House Royal Golf Club. Good luck to the team selected to play on the day and to everyone who has helped the team get to the final. Let's hope they can keep the form going for one more match and bring home the trophy
Jeff Wins David Blair Trophy Congratulations to Moray member
Jeff Wright on winning the David Blair North of Scotland Open Amateur Championship at Inverness Golf Club with rounds of 68, 64, 72, 66 for a 6 under total to win by 4 shots. Moray's
Kyle Godsman lead after rounds of 69, 67, 67 but unfortunately fell away with a final round 75 to finish in a tie for 5th place. Still another great week for the two close friends who have had some great success in the last couple of months.....keep it up guys.

James and John were playing a friendly game. They came to 10th Green on the Old Course and James' approach on landing hit the down slope and shot across the green and ended up 2 feet into the gorse bush.
He deemed it unplayable and told John that he was going to take 2 club lengths to the side.
The spot he was going to have to drop was in deep rough.
James marked out 2 club lengths from his ball dropped it but it struck the ground nearer the hole and therefore he had to re-drop.
At this stage he decided to change his mind and go back to where he had played his pitch and re-take the shot for the same penalty of one stroke.
Was John in agreement with this interpretation of the Unplayable Ball Rule?
Yes. Because James had dropped his ball in a wrong place and as it was not played, under Rule 20-6 he was entitled to proceed under any of the options of Rule 28 Unplayable Ball.
