Hello golfers,
I hope you've all had a fantastic week on and off the golf course and welcome to another exciting edition of the Moray Pro Shop weekly newsletter, bringing you up to date with all the latest news and gossip from within the walls of MGC.
The Capro Cup
The countdown is on to the biggest golfing event of the year.....Yes it's the Capro Cup. 24 members will take to the links at Moray GC over the weekend with both teams fighting to be crowned the Capro Cup Champions 2016.
We will be kicking things off with the four ball matches at 9am on Saturday followed by Greensomes in the afternoon. I'm then very confident that my team will be off to bed early to focus on the final day's singles matches over the Old Course.
I can now release the Saturday AM fourball matches which are as follows:
I believe that there is also another team match worth watching over the same weekend. Hopefully Team Europe can make it 4 straight Ryder Cup wins in a row as they take on the mighty USA at Hazeltine Country Club.
United States skipper Davis Love released his final wildcard pick in Ryan Moore and also added Bubba Watson to his team of vice captains for the event.
Hopefully it will be as exciting as usual, and I'm certainly looking forward to a weekend glued to the big screen.
However excitement over the upcoming golf events quickly turned to sadness as one of the all time greats of the game, Arnold Palmer passed away aged 87.
He was one of golf's dominant players in the 1950's and early 1960's winning 7 majors over 7 seasons including 4 Masters green jackets. Apart from his 7 majors, he also notched up 62 PGA Tour wins.
Tributes have flooded in on social media with Jack Nicklaus, whose sporting rivalry with Palmer spanned over half a century said ''Arnold transcended the game of golf. He was more than a golfer or even great golfer. He was an icon. He was a legend''.
One of my favorite quotes from Palmer was ''Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated......It satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening - and it is without doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented''.
Rest in Peace.....Arnold Palmer..
Castle Stuart Trip a Great Success
Our first member's away day to Castle Stuart on Saturday was a great success. Thankfully the weather was fairly kind for the majority of the round with only a short rain shower towards the end of the round catching the later starters.
We had a total of 31 golfers take to the links and to keep things interesting I ran an Individual stableford. The top 3 places were as follows:
1st - Andrew F Stuart (3) - 41pts
2nd - Willie Adams (5) - 35pts
3rd - Terry Scholefield (5) - 34pts
I was lucky to have the eventual winner as my playing partner on the day and I'm certain his play must have been influenced by playing alongside me.. It was certainly great to watch as Andy managed birdies at 6, 9, 11 an eagle at the 2nd.
He even managed a blob at the 3rd on route to his huge winning 41 pts...
Adams Makes it Lucky Number 7
Bob Adams made it his 3rd hole in 1 this year and his 7th in his golfing career.
Bob managed to ace the 11th on the New Course with his 5 wood while playing in the senior's stableford.
He was partnered by Bob McPherson and Jim Rae.
Northern Counties
Moray 1 came through some difficult matches beating Murcar Links, Royal Dornoch 1 and Cruden Bay 2 to get to the final days play.
Moray eventually lost in the semi finals to Royal Aberdeen 1 by 2 hole. However the team almost produced an amazing comeback to snatch victory.
Malcolm Macleman & Stuart Tatters were 4 down during the match early on but managed to take a 1 hole lead going down the 18th, only to lose the hole and finish all square. In the 2nd game, Kyle Godsman & Graham Murray were 7 down with 6 to play and managed to claw it back to 2 holes down after the 18th but unfortunately the team just ran out of holes.
Nevertheless a great performance, and hopefully they can go one further next year when the event will be hosted by Moray Golf Club.
