The Ryder Cup

It was a fun packed weekend of golf with the Ryder Cup and our very own Capro Cup going on over the weekend.

Europe suffered their worst defeat in over 35 years with a 17-11 loss to the American team. Friday mornings 4-0 whitewash in the foursomes proved to be decisive in the end and it's fair to say the USA players were the better team over the weekend. However despite the loss it was still a great golfing spectacle and I feel like the 17-11 scoreline doesn't really show how close it really was in the end. The importance of a single putt here and there and a ½ point won or lost has a huge impact on the overall score come Sunday afternoon. The USA team had 4 matches that were won by a margin of 1UP after 18 holes. Had those matches been a 1UP victory for Europe, then they would have been 15-13 winners..

Garcia only managed a ½ point in his final Sunday singles, but produced what could have been one of the greatest Ryder Cup duals in history against Mickelson with a total of 19 birdies between them...

However Europe's top points scorer was the Rookie Thomas Pieters who was one of Clarke's Wildcard Picks with a hugely impressive 4 points in his first Ryder Cup..

It's safe to say that the American fans were a little more vocal than their European counterparts during the week with shouts of "Get in the Water'', "Are you laying up" and my favourite "BabaBooey". It certainly seemed to get Rory McIlroy pumped up for the occasion however, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the fans reactions. Was it too much or is that what we should now expect?

Capro Cup

Closer to home and I held our first Capro Cup event at the club with two teams of 12 representing either the Professionals team or the Captains team. On Saturday we all met in the clubhouse for Coffee & Bacon rolls and team photos before each match was announced onto the first tee in front of their team mates.

The morning fourball matches went ahead in glorious sunshine and it was almost a repeat of the Ryder Cup whitewash as the Professionals team marched to a 5.5-0.5 lead, and the first event looked as though it could almost be over before we got to Sunday's singles..

However a valiant comeback saw the Captains team restore some pride with a 3.5-2.5 win during the afternoon Greensomes matches to trail 8-4 going into Sunday's singles.

Another glorious day on the links and with everyone up for the match we set of around the Old Course with 12 singles matches to decide the result of the opening Capro Cup event. After early signs of a comeback from the Captains team, a late surge from my team managed to scrape us over the line with a 14-10 victory to lift the trophy.

Saturday's Opening 4balls...

It was a great weekends golf and I'm glad to say everyone seemed to have a great weekend with lots of banter and one or 2 beers along the way too (possibly including myself.)

Rule of the week

Playing in the Lady Gordon against Brian, Alistair was 1 up standing on the 18th tee. Brian was on the green in three but a long way from the hole. Alistair plays his third stroke from the front edge of the green and comes to rest a foot from the hole. Brian goes over and shakes hands with Alistair. What was the correct result of this match?

The handshake between players is deemed to represent an agreement to concede each players' next stroke. Accordingly Alistair wins the match by 1 hole.
