Competition news

Capro Cup

With the season fast approaching we will shortly be taking entries for this year's Capro Cup.

I ran this event last year in conjunction with the Ryder Cup and it was such a success that we have decided to try to make this a regular fixture in the diary.

There will be 10 qualifying events over the season which will include 6 Monthly Medals plus 4 extra events. We will have 3 qualifying sections which are scr-5, 6-9 and 10 plus. At the end of the last qualifier, we will release the teams and those who qualify will get team clothing and get to play in the event which will be in early October.

It will follow a similar format to Ryder Cup, with Fourball and Greensomes on the Saturday followed by Singles matches on the Sunday.

Look out for the full details in the next couple of weeks.

Sweepstake

Masters Mania!

Can you believe it, the US Masters is now only 3 weeks away! Who will be wearing the famous green jacket come the Sunday Night? Will Tiger Woods ever make another Masters or has injury taken its toll? Who will win the Pro Shop US Masters Sweepstake?

We will be running a Masters Sweepstake at £5 per ticket with the winner picking up an Ltd Edition TaylorMade Season Opener Tour Bag worth £349. We will also have a new TaylorMade Milled Grind Wedge for 2nd place and a dozen of the new TaylorMade TP5 Golf Balls as used by Dustin Johnson for 3rd place.

Each player will be sealed in an envelope. You will select an envelope at random and write your name on the outside. We will then reveal the draw of players names once all envelopes have been sold prior to the 1st round on Thursday.

Rule of the week

While Graeme and Billy were playing in the Saturday Medal the conversation quickly came round to the proposed New Rules. "What are your thoughts on these" Billy asked.

Graeme replied that with 30 major proposed changes it will take time to come to terms with such diversity from the current norm but on first reading the changes all seem to be fair and logical. I particularly like the Fixed Distance (Not Club lengths) to be used for measuring. At present we have 1 Club length for free relief, 2 club lengths for penalty relief, and 2 club lengths for the Teeing ground Definition.

The proposed Rule: Club lengths would no longer be used to measure for any purpose.

The relief area for dropping a ball would have a fixed size of 20 inches (50.8 centimetres) replaces one club length and 80 inches (203.2 centimetres) replaces 2 club lengths.

A re-drop would only be required when a ball comes to rest outside the relief area (bearing in mind the new procedure for dropping a ball) The teeing ground has a fixed depth of 80 inches (203.2 centimetres)

Reasons for the change: The smaller relief area (and not permitting any ball to roll outside that relief area) would usually mean that the player will play from closer to the ball's original spot and the nearest point of relief, than where the player may play from today.

Using a Fixed Distance for measuring would eliminate a number of issues, such as: The inconsistency and potential unfairness of having the size of a relief area differ for each player based on the length of his or her clubs (including eliminating the advantage for players who currently use a long putter for measuring)
