Greetings from John Murray
Moray Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional
I hope you've all had a fantastic week on and off the golf course and welcome to another exciting edition of the Moray Pro Shop weekly newsletter, bringing you up to date with all the latest news and gossip from within the walls of MGC.
This week we have been hosting the Northern Open over the Old Course. Unfortunately after weeks of dry and sunny weather, competitors were treated with 36 hours of continuous rain and winds which put a slight dampener on the opening rounds. However on a more positive note, the course held up fantastically well with the greens somehow not flooding on Tuesday which allowed all players to finish their first rounds.
On Wednesday, some flooding on the 7th and 8th fairways and some very high winds delayed play with a 2 tee start at 2.30pm finally allowing players to get going in some dry and slightly calmer conditions which was reflected in the scoring.
The biggest change in scores was Marc Owenson (Gullane) who shot 86 followed by a 63...Only a 23 shot swing between rounds which just goes to show how bad the weather was on day 1!
Our local lads did reasonably well in the tough conditions. Derek managed 85 in round 1 and followed this with 75 in round 2 which wasn't quite good enough to make the cut. Moray's Jake Scott was one of 2 amateurs to tee it up for the club. Jake had rounds of 82 & 72 to agonisingly miss the cut by just one shot!
However we do have someone to cheer on for the final 36 holes today! Moray's Graham Murray shot rounds of 78 & 70 for a 36 hole total of 148 to make the top 32 qualifiers.
Good Luck Graham!!
By the time this newsletter reaches you the final round will probably be completed. If you would like to check out the scores click here.
Last weekend I hosted my annual Pro's Day on the Old Course. Thanks to everyone who took part in the day and supported the event. Thanks also to my staff off Derek, Alan and Michael, My Bar staff at the 9th green (Mel & Amanda) and Steve Crane for his help with check in and scoring which allowed me to head out onto the course on a few occasions.
We ran an individual stableford and a team (best 2 from 4) stableford on the day and also had nearest the pins on each of the par 3's and a longest drive on the 18th.
Derek did a Beat the Pro on the 6th hole of the Old Course. Congratulations to everyone who managed to beat Derek (19 in total) and win themselves a sleeve of Titleist Pro V1. A big thanks to everyone else who deliberately let Derek win all in aid of a good cause.
We also ran a Putt to be a Millionaire event during the evening once the weather improved and congratulations to Jake Scott who managed to win a 4 ball to Gleneagles by holing 4 consecutive putts from 3ft, 6ft, 12ft and finally 20ft. I even managed to get the evidence on video to show you all! Well Done Jake! Click here to watch.
In total we managed to raise just over £600 for the local LadyBird Group on the day which was great. Thanks to everyone for their support.

Playing the 3rd Old George's tee shot was hit right and bounced off the banking on landing and heading towards the line of whin bushes. They searched for 4mins but the ball could not be found. In frustration George hit the top of the whin bush and his ball dropped to the ground. He shrugged his shoulders and turned to David "what happens now?"
David explained that George incurred a one stroke penalty under Rule 12 -1 for Ball moved during search and for another one stroke penalty he could deem his Ball Unplayable under Rule 28. David added that under the Proposed new Rules 2019 there would be NO penalty for a ball moved during search.
