This week is a get out of jail for 2 penalty strokes (2019) this could be a very useful in soft sand, rain and wet bunkers - which is nobody’s favourite shot. Unplayable ball in a bunker Rule 28-1 Bruce’s drive at the 7th Old found the bunker in the middle of the fairway. It had been a dry spell of weather and the sand was very soft and his Ball was plugged at the front of the bunker. He pondered his options that were available to him. Under penalty of 1 stroke he could choose any of the 3 options. Two of the options would require him to drop the ball in the bunker which would probably plug in the soft sand but the 3rd option was to proceed under stroke and distance provision of Rule 27-1 by playing a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (see Rule 20-5). Bruce did not fancy going back to the tee so he chose the second option. His Ball did plug on dropping and he took another 3 shots to get out of the bunker.
He was very disappointed and commented to Brian “roll on 2019 proposed new rules which will allow me under 2 penalty strokes to drop my ball out of the bunker in a line behind my ball and the flag with no limit to how far behind it may be dropped”.
