Greetings from John Murray Moray Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional I hope you've all had a fantastic week on and off the golf course and welcome to another exciting edition of the Moray Pro Shop weekly newsletter, bringing you up to date with all the latest news and gossip from within the walls of MGC.
It was great to see some nice weather over the Bank Holiday weekend which allowed some of us to take the plunge and get the shorts and t-shirts on for the first time of the year.
We had another good turnout in the Arcadia Cup on Saturday with 142 Players taking to the Old Course. Derek and I ran our first Wee Wonders Golf Event aimed at kids aged 5-12 which was played over a shortened 9-hole course. We had 25 children take part with some traveling from Aboyne and Royal Dornoch to take part. There was age categories 5-6, 7-8,9-10 and 11-12 with three qualifiers in each section. The qualifiers go onto play in the Regional Qualifier at Gleneagles in a couple months’ time.
A couple of great rules on the day included: - Maximum of 10 shots could be scored at any hole - Maximum of 4 putts at any hole - Maximum of 3 shots in a bunker (then throw it out) Congratulation to the following Moray players who made it through to the Regional Finals - Jennifer Pyett (Girls 11-12) - James Crilley (Boys 11-12) - Leo Mullen (Boys 7-8)
Have a great weekend and see you down on the links over the weekend! John

A day out at East Lothian
Last week we took a trip down to East Lothian to pay a visit to the Performance Centre at Archerfield Links. This is a State of the art facility which has 3 indoor teaching studios and an indoor putting studio which utilizes Trackman, V1 Video Systems, SAM PuttLab, SAM Balance Lab and the only facility in Europe with GEARS. GEARS is a full swing, club and body tracking system, measuring and analysing every nuance of a swing, in full 3D, from address to follow through. Built on the same technology used by biomechanists and Filmmakers, GEARS is the most advanced motion capture solution developed specifically for golf. |
We took one of our friends and Moray member Stuart Tatters down with us to have a 2-hour session on the Gears system. Derek and I sat in on the session and listened in as Golf Professional, Oliver Morton took Stuart through the process. There really was no guess work as the system highlighted everything in the swing and the level of information available is unbelievable. However, what was great was that the session was still put across to Stuart in a very simple way to not overload the customer with information. If you are into your technology and interested in learning more about your golf swing, then I can highly recommend this!! It’s not cheap at £150 per 2-hour session but if anyone is interested then let me know and I can arrange this for you.
We also managed a game at Ladybank Golf Club on our way down to Archerfield which was in great condition. Ladybank is a former Open Championship Qualifying course and provides a great test of golf with tree lined, firm fairways and true rolling greens. Full members at Moray GC get the privilege to play here for only £15 (Members Guest rate) as part of our member benefit package and it’s an unbelievable deal and well worth the trip down to play. If your down pop your head into the Pro Shop and say hi to Sandy Smith (Head Professional) and one of my old bosses at Gleneagles (just don’t buy anything from him.... Haha!!) |
Godsman Lifts North District Trophy
Moray members Kyle Godsman won the North District Championships at Tain Golf Club with superb rounds of 68 & 66 to win by 6 shots and lift the Association Cup and the Silver Medal. Kyle was joined by fellow member Graham Murray to also lift the North District Club Team Championships. This format took the best 2 scores from 3 team players. However, Moray managed to lift the team trophy with only 2 players representing the Club in the event which made it all the more impressive! Well Done Boys.....Moray GC now hold all 4 team trophies which is hugely impressive |
PING Fitting Day
Thank you to everyone who came along to last week’s PING Fitting Day at the Range.

Perfect for cooler rounds Yes, we've enjoyed a record-breaking Early May Bank Holiday weekend without a sweater in sight, but the reality is temperatures will soon get a little cooler over the coming days. To combat the chill whilst on the course, especially early mornings or late evenings, consider a ProQuip quilted windproof, which provide lightweight warmth whilst blocking out any wind. |

How does a FREE custom fitting and FREE lesson sound?
The past 12 months have seen some fantastic clubs brought to market at a time when technology continues to amaze many people around the world. It's so important for golfers of all abilities - particularly amateurs, who have far more to gain - to get custom fitted, as opposed to leaving it to chance, like you'd be doing if you bought standard spec clubs straight off the shelf. You really have nothing to lose. We will help you to get the most out of any new equipment through a thorough custom fitting process before you buy, followed by a lesson to see you on your way. Come and speak to us in-store if you're interested, but remember this offer is only available until Sunday, 1 July. This offer runs for Lynx, PING, Titleist and TaylorMade equipment.

Which ball is in play?
Paul hit a poor sliced tee shot into the gorse at the 7th Old and immediately announced that he would play a provisional ball. Teed up and hit a perfect drive well down the fairway. I’m not going to look for my first ball said Paul, but the other players went to search for his original ball and found it a foot into the gorse. They called to Paul to come and identify the ball, but he said that on the tee he was not going to look for his original ball. What did the other players do in this situation? In match or stroke play your opponent or fellow competitors have the right to be satisfied about the identification of a player’s ball and thus Paul cannot decline to identify the ball that was found irrespective of what he had announced on the tee. If it was his Ball he had to abandon the provisional ball and continue play with his ball played from the tee.
|
Let’s face it: we all want to hit the ball further. Being able to hit longer drives gives you less club into the green, making everything that little bit easier. There are many ways you can try and generate more power during your swing, and nearly all of them start from the ground up. |
Trust your footwear Despite his small frame, tour star Rickie Fowler is renowned for his power. As you can see in the three images above, he pushes off from his right foot through impact and relies on great grip and stability to ensure the power his body is creating doesn’t come at the cost of control. Having a strong base is something we should all aspire for. The FootJoy Tour-S can help you do this thanks to its PowerStrap that enhances support, plus its nine cleats per foot that offer maximum stability across a range of terrains. |
