Greetings from John Murray Moray Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional
It’s been a rather windy week as Hurricane Clara hammered the UK. It’s made playing golf a tad tricky, however, although it’s been a little quieter, some of our hardened members have still taken on the Links.
As a result of the weather, Sunday’s winter cup only had a total of 9 players take to the course and nobody took to the course on Tuesdays Seniors Winter Cup. Let’s hope the weather improves for the coming weekend and let’s a few more of you out on the courses.

On the Tour
Golf's governing bodies are planning a review of equipment rules in a bid to curb increasing hitting distances, which they see as "undesirable and detrimental". In their latest Distance Insights Report, the R&A and USGA declared action is needed to reduce the length the ball travels if the sport is to thrive in the future. The report states the average hitting distance across the European Tour and PGA Tour has increased at a rate of about one yard per year since 2013.
The R&A and USGA were concerned the developments could compromise the challenges presented by many courses, while citing that longer set-ups are more expensive to build, operate, maintain and place greater pressure on the environment.
So is it all down to changing equipment and ball or can we make other changes to protect the future of our courses and our game? Surely shorter courses with tighter lines of the tee, tricky hazards and green complexes can ensure that the game doesn’t just become a long drive contest!
It will certainly be interesting to hear what comes out of this review and I’m sure we will hear about its findings in due course.
Elsewhere and the chat has on tour has been surrounding the news that a proposed Premier Golf League is being considered away from the current European and USPGA Tours. It certainly still seems to be early days with this idea but it’s certainly got the players and those involved with the tours talking.
However, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and European Tour CEO Keith Pelley have sent strong-worded memos to their players warning of the risks of going with the new tour and how it would affect their tour membership. Watch this space!!
Proposed Premier Golf League Format - 48 Players - 18 events (10 in USA) - 54 holes - No Cut - Individual & Team League Format - $10 million individual purse per event - $2 million for winner - $40 team fund - $14 million split between winning 4 man team

Winter Programme Despite the poor weather over the last week, Kevin and his team have been working hard on finishing their winter programme.
The team have just finished rebuilding and reshaping the last of 26 bunkers over the previous few months. The last couple were the fairway bunkers on the left side of the 12th Old and also the right greenside bunker on the same hole. The greenside bunker has been reshaped making it more visible from the fairway and the fairway bunker has gone from 2 bunkers into just the one. As with most of the fairway bunkers the aim make them more playable and easier to move the ball further up the fairway. Here are a couple of before and after shots from their latest work.
