Golf on Tour

The UK Swing begins

The British Masters finally gave European Tour fans something to cheer. Whilst the Tour had technically resumed with a couple of weakened fields in Austria, this was the first ‘proper’ European Tour event since lockdown began all those months ago. Renato Paratore was the eventual winner, with the young Italian going 62 holes before his first bogey on the 9th in the final round.

Paratore’s incredible golf came at a soggy Close House course, hosted by Lee Westwood, in the first of a six-tournament “UK Swing”. This week, players high enough in the World Rankings can choose between the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational or the English Open. Next week, it will be a choice between staying put for the English Championship or heading to San Francisco for the first Major of 2020; the PGA Championship. Things are about to get interesting!

Course Reviews

A Birds Eye View

We had this photo taken by Ru Macdonald on his recent trip to Moray.  Ru works as the ''social media guy" for the European Tour and host of the Scottish Golf Podcast scottishgolfpodcast.com

He was very complimentary of the course and in particular our finishing hole saying "As 18th holes go, @MorayGC's is hard to beat!"

We had another positive social media review from another visitor known as @ukgolfguy on twitter

He posted a video of the 18th Old which can be seen by clicking here.

He said "A lot of people had told me how good @MorayGC was going to be and it didn't disappoint.  If your travelling from Aberdeen to Inverness it is a must-play"  

Great to see so much positivity around the club at the moment after so much to be concerned about a couple of months ago.

Latest results

This week we have had another positive week on the competition front. Last weeks Sam Smith Cup on Thursday saw a massive 121 entrants which are unheard of on a midweek competition! The weather since has taken a bit of a turn for the worst with lots of wind and some pretty wet days too. I even sold a winter beanie this week to one of our members!!

Derek passes

Congratulation to Derek on his latest qualification through Penn State University.  Derek wasn't just drinking wine and playing golf during lockdown!!

He was, in fact, continuing his learning with a 3-month course in golf biomechanics.  

We really can call him DR Golf now... Well Done Derek!

Very lucky to have such a dedicated professional with us here at Moray GC!

Next up for Derek is the TPi (Titleist Performance Institute) POWER 2 course where Derek will learn all things SPEED and will soon be in an even better position to help you all gain distance on your drives!!

I believe he's also the first Professional in Scotland to take this course so looking forward to hearing all about it!

Club news

Caddies needed

As things are slowly returning towards what we know as normal, we are also seeing visitors start to return to the courses. We usually get a number of caddie requests during the year and so usually have a pool of names we can call on during the season. If you would have spare time (mainly midweek) and be willing to caddie then please click on the link below and fill out the attached form. The standard caddie fee is £40 plus gratuity for 18 holes.

As a Caddie you will be expected to:

- Carry your player's bag (no pulling carts)
- Give general guidance around the golf course
- Give hole descriptions & target lines from each tee
- Locate golf balls and provide accurate yardages (Own GPS unit required)
- Rake bunkers, replace divots and repair pitch marks
- Clean clubs and golf balls
- Tend the flagstick and read putts if asked
- Carry out other duties, as necessary
- Smart appearance (golfing attire - No Jeans)

Italian night

After a successful first Steak, Grill and Fish night last Saturday evening, our caterers have the next date for your diary.  

On Saturday 8th August our caterers will be hosting an Italian Night.

We have a restricted number of tables available For these themed nights due to social distancing restrictions in place and so can only currently cater for around 40 people.

Time to update your wedges?

That moment when you pitch the ball close to the pin and stop it on a dime for a tap-in putt is like no other. It dramatically reduces your score whilst looking awesome. As with all shots, it requires both technique and confidence, not to mention wedges with sharp grooves.

A recent survey highlighted that a third of golfers carry wedges that are over five years old. We appreciate that everyone has a club or two in their bag that they love but grooves will gradually deteriorate over time.

If you are one of these golfers, it's worth coming to see us for a chat. We can get you testing some new wedges against your current ones to see if it's time for a change.

Video of the Week

This European Tour challenge is pretty simple: pick your favourite club and play the entire hole with it. Close House was the venue ahead of last week's British Masters, but how did the players get on? There were certainly a few surprises!
