Greetings from John Murray
Moray Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

I hope you've all had a fantastic week on and off the golf course and welcome to another exciting edition of the Moray Pro Shop weekly newsletter, bringing you up to date with all the latest news and gossip from within the walls of MGC.

Last week we had some strange events happening at the club. Firstly, we had the solar eclipse take place. Unfortunately it was too cloudy to see much, but it certainly got darker, colder and a bit on the windy side for around 10 mins. I was out coaching at the time and it was quite noticeable. Julieann and I were very careful to adhere to health and safety guidelines and cover our eyes. I can happily say that neither of us have lost our sight quite yet!

Finally, another strange site on the course......It was me!! I was out playing again on Friday and so far my plan to play more golf this year is working. The courses are really starting to take shape and we have had lots of positive comments on the new bunkers and the 12th tees in particular.

Foremost Golf Workshop

Last week I made the trip down to Deer Park Golf & Country Club for the Annual Foremost Spring Workshop. For those of you who don't know, Foremost are the UK's largest buying group, of which I am a member. This allows me to benefit from the very best terms from my suppliers and take part in some great promotions such as our current 4 for 3 on Titleist Pro V1 balls, and £20 Bag Trade In Offer. I am also part of the EMP (Elite Marketing Program) which brings you this newsletter and my website (www.johnmurraypgapro.co.uk).

Every year, all the Scottish Pro's are invited to an annual workshop to hear about Foremost's plans for the coming year and it's also a great way of sharing ideas with fellow PGA Pros. This year I was asked by Foremost to speak at the event. It was a great honour, although slightly daunting!! After a few sleepless nights preparing my presentation and trying to remember how to create a PowerPoint presentation (it's been a while), I'm glad to say it went well and everyone seemed to understand and enjoy the presentation (nobody fell asleep!!) I brought Derek with me for him to experience what goes on at these events and allow him to meet some of the other Foremost Golf members and staff which we work so closely with on a regular basis.

I think Derek really enjoyed the day and we both took a lot of new ideas away with us from the day which we shall try to implement to you over the coming months.

The season is nearly here! We will be moving back onto normal summer rules from this weekend and so no more mats or pulling to the side. This will start off with the annual Whitbread Shield match against our close neighbours Elgin. We have been on the losing side for the last few years so let's hope 2015 is a better year and we bring the victory and trophy back to Moray GC. Good luck to everyone playing. I will be heading up to Elgin later on Saturday to cheer on the low hcap players and hopefully help them celebrate!!

Last weekend saw the final winter competition being held over the Old Course. The winter cup final had an entry of 73 players and with the majority playing on the better day (Saturday), there was some great scoring.

Neil Stewart posted 38 pts to pip John Petrie, Colin Ironside and Alan Lees, all on 37 points into 1st place in Division 1.

In Division 2, Barbara Caie continued her run of amazing form to post 47 points over the Old Course helping her win the Division 2 Winter Cup final section, adding this to her overall victory in the winter cup points table last weekend.

Magic 2's

2's worth £7.00 to the following players:

6th - N Dawson, J Conn
15th - C Ironside, K Walker, Graeme Hamilton, N Stables, A Casey, J Higginson, B Whitefoot.

Masters Special Offers

With only 2 weeks until the first major of the year, we have decided to offer a couple of great promotions between now and the start of the Masters.

Offer 1 - Buy a Scotty Cameron Putter and if Adam Scott wins the Masters, we will give you your money back (as shop credit)

Offer 2 - Buy any new wood over £199 and if Justin Rose wins the Masters, we will give you your money back (as shop credit)

We still have our annual Masters Sweepstake available in the shop at £5 per square. With the Masters being a reduced field of approx. 96 golfers you have a much better chance of winning. Prizes are available for the top 5 places, best and worst rounds each day and the leading amateur.

We still have a few spaces for our Junior Easter Camp running from 6th-8th April.

We have an under 10's and over 10's section running each day for 90 mins at a cost of £25 per child.

Click here or call the shop to sign up your child

Junior Locker Room

I'm pleased to say we have been working on improving the current junior room upstairs. The old TV from the Spike bar has been mounted onto the wall in the junior room and with the help of Sandy Bruce and Jocky Sandison, we have fixed the lockers onto the wall which has created a much better space for juniors to chill out after their game. If anyone has a spare table tennis or pool table that they could have, that would help complete the room!! (Haha) I will keep you posted on the room as it develops.

Saturday, 11 April

Reggie Promotions presents Vegas Night @ Moray GC featuring Jason Porter as Michael Buble

Tickets available from the bar at £15 each

This includes a light supper and entertainment in the south lounge.

We will then have a Casino Night in the North Lounge and spike bar which will be open to all members (No Tickets Required)

On a very windy Saturday, Derek's ball came to rest in a plastic bag, but before he could treat it as "ball lying on a movable obstruction requiring him to drop his ball directly under where it lay in the obstruction without penalty" a sudden gust of wind blew the bag and ball into a nearby bunker. Derek was unsure now if he has to drop his ball directly underneath where it now lies in the bunker? Luckily he was playing with John who kept him right on this rule. What did he have to say?

A. Wind is not an outside agency. However if an object (the plastic bag) is moved by the wind and moves a ball, the object is an outside agency in these circumstances and in this case the bag, not the wind, caused the ball to move. Accordingly under Rules 18-1 and 24-1b Derek must drop his ball directly under the place where it ORIGINALLY lay in the bag.
