Greetings from John Murray
Moray Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

I hope you've all had a fantastic week on and off the golf course and welcome to another exciting edition of the Moray Pro Shop weekly newsletter, bringing you up to date with all the latest news and gossip from within the walls of MGC.

What a fantastic weekend of golf we had once again at Augusta in the Masters with Jordan Speith putting on a golfing master class at just 21 years of age to take his first major crown. Speith led from start to finish and broke the 18/36 and 54 total records, and in the end bogeyed the final hole to tie the lowest 72 hole total score alongside Tiger Woods.

Certainly not short from the tee but at only #63 in driving distance on the PGA Tour, Speith showed just how much difference the short stick can make to scoring at this level. He is currently ranked #1 in putts per round with an average of 27.47 putts per round and this has helped him to 7 top 10 finishes in only 10 events including 2 x 1st and 2 x 2nd place finishes......not bad at all!

Congratulations to Colin McConnachie who picked out Jordan Speith in our Masters Sweepstake to win £120 shop credit. In the other end of the event, Malcolm Macleman picked out Ben Crenshaw who played his last competitive Masters tournament and with rounds of 85 and 91 still earned Malcolm £20 shop credit for the worst rounds of the 1st and 2nd rounds (£10 each).

See below for a full roundup of prizes:

Possible Men's Golf Outing

I am looking at arranging a potential away day outing for adult members of the club. I am currently looking at a day away playing Boat of Garten Golf Club on Saturday, 30 May and am just looking to see if this is something you may be interested in?

Click here if you would be interested and whether you would prefer to drive or get a bus (allowing time for some after game refreshments)

This is a free weekend on the competition front and the club are hosting the Scottish Amateur Strokeplay Championship between 28-31st May and so the Old Course will be out of action for members. I am trying to secure a package price to include green fee, bacon roll/coffee on arrival, soup and sandwich after golf and a small pot for some on day prizes. I will hopefully have some further information in the next couple weeks.

We had a very successful Easter junior camp and will now have an after schools session available on Mondays.

Monica Grant will head up the ClubGolf level 1 coaching between 4-5pm. Ideally aimed at children between 8-12 that are relatively new to golf. This will focus on the basic skills involved in golf. The session cost £2, which is payable on the day.

Derek and I will be taking those aged 10+ who have played golf before but are looking to develop their skills and is an ideal follow on from ClubGolf Level 1 coaching. These sessions will run for 8 weeks starting on Monday, 3 May and the cost of this course will be £40 for the 8 sessions.

If you're interested or would like further information, please call the shop on 813330 or click here to get in touch.

We will also be running another ClubGolf Summer Camp at Moray GC aimed at children between 8-12 years old. These sessions will start on Monday 6th July and finish on Wednesday 8th July. Each of the 3 days will run from 10am-2pm and the cost is £40 for the extended 3 days.

Call the shop to make your reservation. Please note due to difficulty in handling money etc on the day of the camps, we require payment upfront to secure your child's place.

Spring Meeting

Congratulations to John Petrie in winning the Spring Meeting on Saturday with an excellent level par gross 71 over the Old Course. John 71 (67) must have taken inspiration from Jordan Speith's play over the weekend as he romped to a 3 stroke victory over Kim Steggall 84 (70) and 4 ahead of Nick Dawson 83 (71) and Terry Scholefield 76 (71). However we had our own Augusta on Saturday with high winds on the day pushing the CSS up to 76. A full list of scores can be viewed on the Club and Pro Shop notice boards.

1st - John D Petrie 71 - 4 = 67
2nd - Kim Steggall 84 - 14 = 70
3rd = Nick J Dawson 83 - 12 = 71
3rd = Terence Peter Scholefield 76 - 5 = 71
5th - John E Goodwin 81 - 8 = 73

Magic 2's were worth £47 to the following players: John Petrie & James Souter

Well Done to Frances Neish on her return to golf having the lowest gross score on the day. Nice to have you back! In Division 2, Elizabeth Munro took the honours with a fine 99 (83) in windy conditions to pip Barbara Hendry (84) and Joan Pratt (84) into a tie for 2nd place.

Division 1

1st - Frances Neish 96 - 6 = 90 6.2

Division 2

1st - Eliz Munro - 99 - 16 = 83 16.0
2nd - Barbara Hendry - 98 - 14 = 84 13.8
3rd - Joan Pratt - 105 - 21 = 84 21.0
4th - Anne Souter - 106 - 20 = 86 19.7
5th - Monica Grant - 117 - 30 = 87 30.1

Playing in the Moray Open at the 13th New, Gilbert found his ball in an unplayable lie. He dropped the ball and it rolled more than 4 club lengths from where it first struck the ground. It was obvious to him that it would do the same when re-dropped. On the re-drop Gilbert stopped his ball before it came to rest within his marked 2 club lengths area because it gained speed going down the slope. Fortunately David was on hand to keep him right with the Rules.

What was the correct penalty?

Gilbert incurred a 2 stroke penalty under Rule 1-2, "Exerting influence on movement of the ball "and must play his ball from where it was stopped.
