Stuart's thinned 2nd shot at the 17th Old was heading for the bunker short left of the green. Arriving at his ball he was dismayed to find it had plugged in the revetted face. Stuart was unsure if he could be entitled to Embedded Ball relief and asked Neil if he could clarify his situation for him. What did Neil have to say?
Fortunately Neil had experienced that situation before and was able to keep Stuart right on the Rules. A revetted face of a bunker is neither closely mown, for the purposes of Embedded Ball Relief, nor is it in the bunker. If Stuart was unable to play his ball, his only option was to declare it unplayable under Rule 28 and because his ball is not in the bunker, all the options under that rule are open to him under 1 stroke penalty .
1. Play a ball from where the original ball was last played.
2. Drop a ball behind the point where his ball lay keeping that spot directly between the hole and that point and with no limit to how far behind the ball may be dropped.
3. Drop a ball within two club lengths of the ball but not nearer the hole..
"That's a great rule. For a 1 stroke penalty I am out of a tricky situation". Thanks Neil.
