We all look forward to seeing who’ll take the trophy each time a major championship is played out. Rory McIlroy’s win at the Masters on Sunday puts him in league with a select group of elite golfers who have one each of the major championships in their field.

Join us as we take a look at some of the familiar faces and lesser-known legends who can truly be considered the best golfers who have ever played the game…

The Men's game

Bobby Jones – A pioneer of golf in the early 20^th Century, Bobby Jones won 9 major championships in the 1920s

Gene Sarazen – Dominating the golden age of golf, Gene Sarazen won 7 majors in his career

Jack Nicklaus – The Golden Bear has won the most major championships with a grand total of 18

Tiger Woods – A name that needs no introduction, Tiger has won 15 majors to date and has captured the attention and adoration of millions

Ben Hogan – A popular character of his time, Ben Hogan secured 6 majors throughout the 1950s

Gary Player – Part of ‘The Big Three’ golfers that dominated the late 20^th Century, Gary Player has 9 major trophies to his name

Rory McIlroy – The men’s games latest grand-slam champion, Rory’s next career targets include winning a Ryder Cup on foreign soil.

The Women's game

The women’s game is slightly different as while the men’s majors have consisted of 4 key tournaments, the women’s tournaments that have been defined as ‘majors’ have varied over time. The following golfers have however secured the grand-slams of their eras.

Annika Sörenstam – Considered one of the best female golfers of all time, Annika Sörenstam secured 10 major titles

Karrie Webb – The only woman to have won 5 different major tournaments, Karrie Webb was a formidable force in the early 2000s

Mickey Wright – She won 13 different major titles including the LPGA and Women’s U.S. Open four times each

Louise Suggs – Louise Suggs achieved popularity for winning both the Women’s Western and Titleholders majors four times each

Juli Inkster – Juli Inkster’s career consisted of 31 wins, 7 of them being major trophies

Pat Bradley – The Massachusetts-native had an unforgettable year in 1986 when she won the Kraft Nabisco, du M Open, and Women’s U.S. Open

Inbee Park – One of the best golfers to emerge from South Korea, Inbee Park has 7 major victories

Who's next?

Who could be next to join the ranks of grand-slam winners? Phil Mickelson is missing only a U.S. Open trophy and Jordan Spieth needs to win the PGA Championship. Xander Schauffele won both the PGA Championship and the Open last year. Lydia Ko has won 3 majors while Nelly Korda and Lilia Vu have 2 to their name.
